This panel session will show YOU how to remain relevant and desirable to credit union employers. Attendees will hear from credit union leaders including Salmon Arm Savings ’s CEO Barry Delaney, Vancity’s Chief Equity & People Officer Janelle Aaker, and First West’s Sr HR Business Partner Brieann Spencer. The panel will share their experiences, knowledge, and learnings from their perspectives as both leaders and employees in the credit union system, covering topics such as: attraction and retention of talent, EDI, mental health, the power of networks, and much more!


Barry Delaney – President & CEO – SASCU Financial Group

Barry has been the CEO of SASCU since he moved his family from Abbotsford to Salmon Arm in 2016. He is an active member of the Northern Okanagan community, serving as a director of the Salmon Arm Economic Development Society, Chair of the Place Branding Team, member of the municipal Housing Task Force and director of the Innovation Centre. A long-time supporter of post-secondary education, Barry is the retired Chair of the Board of Governors for the University of the Fraser Valley, where its main campus is located in Abbotsford. He is currently serving as a director on the Central1 Board. SASCU is $1 billion in asset size plus it stewards $230 million in investments for its members, employs 150 people, operates 5 locations and has a membership base of 19,000.

Prior to SASCU, Barry held senior leadership positions as the CEO Northern Savings Credit Union (Prince Rupert), SVP First West Credit Union (Langley), CIBC (Calgary) and HFC (Chicago, Montreal and Toronto). Barry holds an MBA from Queens University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary. Immediately after graduating from university, Barry worked for one year in Denmark at the LEGO toy company in their International Marketing department. This is the only professional achievement of which his children are proud.

Barry is a past board member for the Cooperative Development Foundation located in Ottawa. The focus of this charity is to alleviate poverty by implementing the credit union model to facilitate sustainable micro-lending opportunities. In this work, Barry has travelled extensively to provide on the ground assistance to credit unions in Ghana, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Peru and Cambodia. Barry has a passion for aviation and holds a commercial pilot’s license, multi-engine and instrument rating. He lives with his wife Ramona, in Salmon Arm with five of their seven children.

Brieann Spencer – Senior HR Business Partner – First West Credit Union – BPHE/BA, CPRH, CanFit Pro PTS/FIS, PROSCI Change Management Practitioner

Brieann has worked in the health and wellbeing industry for over 20 years; more than half of those years have been spent cultivating an inclusive, healthy and vibrant workplace for one of Canada’s largest Credit Unions, First West Credit Union. Brieann’s background in physical health and education, paired with her deep expertise in Human Resources, ability to coach individuals through change, and her genuine desire to connect and learn from everyone she interacts with, gives her the unique ability to work closely with client groups across First West to discover and achieve their potential.  

Combining her passion, education and knowledge, Brieann is known for her mental health advocacy, she believes in the power of equipping people with the tools and resources to live their best life. Embracing a learner’s mentality and truly walking the talk of authentic and vulnerable leadership have helped Brieann to forge an exciting path for First West.  

Grounded in the belief that every movement and every moment matters; in her down time, you’ll often find Brie playing around outside with her husband and 2 young daughters, enjoying everything that the province of BC has to offer.     

Janelle Aaker – Chief Equity & People Officer – Vancity

As Vancity’s Chief Equity and People Officer, Janelle leads the organization’s Human Resources team, with a focus on its diversity, equity, inclusion, and reconciliation strategies.

Janelle is known as a driving force in creating diversity and equity and has experience with global companies such as Lululemon and Nike. She is highly regarded for her thoughtful and values-driven leadership of human resources and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies and teams. As VP of Global Diversity & Inclusion and Chief of Staff for People & Culture at Lululemon, Janelle led the organization’s first global roadmap to advance diversity and inclusion.

Prior to joining lululemon in 2015, Janelle spent 9 years at Nike, Inc where she held various roles in HR, including Talent Acquisition, Talent Development, HR Operations and HR Generalist. She also spent 3 years working in Global Sales and Brand Marketing at Nike.
